Today, we discussed about EMR (Electronic Medical Records) in class and made short video that shows basically what EMR is including its advantages and disadvantages, related IT issues and IT systems.
EMR
A electronic medical record (EMR) is a computerized medical record created by organizations like hospitals and drugstores. In the old days, all the records were kept in hard files that were kept in shelves. However, EMR is stored in computers often using database software.
Advantage
- Takes up small place. No papers needed to store information.
- Can be sent to and viewed with various devices at the same time.
- less medical costs.
- Well-organized. The errors associated with information accuracy lessened.
Disadvantage
- Initial cost is expensive. [software and hardware]
- It may be hard to get used to.
- The chance of lost records is significant if the system breaks down.
IT Issues
Privacy - personal medical records of patients must be stored securely so that they don't leak out.
Security - Tight security is needed to protect data.
Integrity - If you have an authority or privilege to access the records, information can be readily modified.
Reliability - If the system breaks down, all information could be lost or damaged.
IT System
Hardware - PCs, monitors, portable devices for viewing data (touch pads - optional), server
Software - Database (i.e. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access etc.)
